85,000 TOMATO PLANTS Altogether 85,000 tomato plants have been planted in the Wniron district this season for the purpose of supplying Swift N.Z. Company, Limited. This year the planting has been carried out more in the nature of an experiment than for serious results, and the various crops, which are owned chiefly by Maoris, are thriving particularly well. Over the week-end the Minister of Native Affairs, Mr. H. G. R. Mason, who was in the district, visited several of tho areas which have been planted and expressed himeelf as being very pleased with the progress shown, adding that the co-operation displayed between the growers, purchasers and merchants was excellent and was well worthy of being acted upon similarly in other centres. Should tho present prices hold, it Is expected that the income from the plantings will return in the vicinity of £2500.
