CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS ASCENDANCY IN BAVARIA COMMUNISTS WELL BACK LONDON, Jan. 28. The Christian Democratic Union, which is Catholic and slightly right of the centre, emerged as the dominant party in rural politics in the American zone in Germany. In the local council elections yesterday it gained four times as many seats as the Social Democrats in Baden and 43 per cent in Bavaria. The final results were. —Bavaria: Christian Democrats. 897,753; Social Democrats, 333,728; Communists, 4G.945; Liberal Democrats, 18,952. Greater Hess District: Social Democrats, 334,324; Christian Democrats, 240,850; Communists, 49,523; Liberal Democrats, 18,565; others, 81,786. One community's vutes remain to be counted in the Baden district, where the Christian Democrats so far have obtained 1867 seats, the Social Democrats 445, the Liberal Democrats 93, Communists 31, and others 106.
