THE DRY SPELL
DIFFICULTIES IN NORTH So low is liie water supply in some districts of Northland following the abnormal dry spell that water has now .to be transported, for stock purposes. In many areas stock are being driven up to five mile s to water, but in the Wellsford district water is being transported to the farms for the use of stock. This water costs the farmers an average or about £3 10s for 400 gallons, the charge varying according to the distance the water has to be transported. Practically over the whole of Northland water is being transported for household purposes. Dairy companies return cream cans filled with water to suppliers. At Kamo a charge of £1 for 300 gallons is being made to householders, there being no water supply to this township.
