SINGAPORE STRIKE
BUSINESS STANDSTILL PROTEST DUE TO ARRESTS (10.40 a.m.) SINGAPORE. Jan. 29. A general strike called by the Malayan Communists has paralysed the transport in Singapore. All the Chinese shops are closed and thousands of shopkeepers, labourers, hospital domestic staffs and hotel servants are involved. Normal activity has been brought to a standstill. An earlier message stated that the Communists had decided to call a general strike as a protest against the recent arrests of members of labour unions in Johore and Perak. They will seek support from Chungking through the Kuomintang and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
