MIGRATION SYSTEM
NEED OF AUSTRALIA REPLACING ‘WHITE’ POLICY (Q a.m.) GOULBURN, Jan. 30. The “White Australia” policy should be replaced by “a system of immigration,”- said Professor A. T. Elkin, professor of anthropology at Sydney. He said that for Australia t;o suggest a review of the “White Australia” policy was to lay itself open to a charge of heresy. An exclusive population policy was less likely to be challenged if Australians respected the aspirations and dignity of other peoples, especially coloured people. The system did not exclude a whole race because of its colour and so was acceptable. j The Australians were apt to resent and avoid immigrants who worked hard and succeeded.
