CITIZENS OF EIRE DE VALERA’S DEFINITION NO ALLEGIANCE TO CROWN (11 a.m.) DUBLIN, Jan. 28. ‘•lt is impertinence to call Eire citizens British subjects,” said the Eire Prime Minister, Mr. E. dc Valera, in a speech at Waterford. ‘ We are an independent republic acknowledging no sovereignty except that of our people. We have our own constitution. No citizen of Eire o\vcs_ allegiance to Britain or to the British Crown. ’ He said that Eire’s new constitution, which was passed in 1937. made the position perfectly clear, and he added that the State’s name had been changed to Eire as an extra precaution.
