STREET NEGLECTED

GREY STREET CONDITION REQUEST TO COUNCIL REFERED TO ESTIMATES The long-standing grievance of residents of the north-east end of Grey street, in respect of the neglected condition of the roadway and footpath between Palmerston road and the Taruheru River was brought before the Gisborne Borough Council in a letter received at last night’s meeting.. The letter pointed out that traffic to and from the gas works created a serious dust nuisance, and the unchecked growth of long grass generally produced unpleasant conditions for residents of .the neighbourhood. The engineer, Mr. G. F. Clapcott, reported that the road was not in bad condition, but that the footway on one side needed attention, at an estimated cost of £22. The Mayor, Mr N H. Bull, pointed out that the council had neither the money nor the material available to improve all the streets at once, and that a schedule of streets requiring improvement had been followed for some years.

He was prepared to move tha,t the council spend £22 on immediate relief in respect of the Grey street footway, and that the roadway be included in the schedule of roads for consideration when next year s estimates were drawn up. Mr. R Morse supported the Mayors remarks, but added that Grey street seemed to have been overlooked a good deal, though the condition of the road flanks was in some degree due to the untidness of residents who deposited clippings of hedges and other debris on them. He seconded the Mayor’s motion, which was carried unanimously.
