FIVE ARMY HUTS

RABBIT BOARD’S PURCHASE RABBITERS’ HOUSING Five army huts from the Kaiti Hill camp have been secured by the East Coast Rabbit Board for accommodation purposes. . , , In their efforts to obtain the huts, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., was seen and as a result the board was able to purchase five huts at present at the old Kaiti Hill camp. Appreciation of the assistance Mr. Coleman had readily given was expressed by members at the recent meeting of the East Coast Rabbit Board.

It was reported at the meeting that Mr. Coleman had taken up the matter of getting rabbit stops provided on the Mohaka viaduct with the Minister of Works. He also was prepared to discuss the question of the condition of the country beyond the board’s southern boundary in the Hawke’s Bay board’s territory with Mr. E. L. Cullen, M.P. This, it was agreed, was very satisfactory as extensive operations for the elimination of the pest in the area adjoining the boundary would prevent infiltration into the board’s territory. To enable ratepayers in the Wairoa area to meet the board members it was decided that the March meeting would be held in Wairoa. The meeting was set down for March 5.

Payments amounting to £1278 14s were confirmed. The inspector for the Wairoa district, Mr. H. Drysdale, reported 282 rabbits and 74 runners killed last month. Points at which numbers were destroyed included Mr. Mogford’s property,. 17 rabbits and 18 runners; Mohaka native land, 24; Otoi, 20 and 6 runners; Cricklewood, 39; Okare, 18 and 14 runners; Ngatapa, 22; Riverina, 27; Te Reinga native land, 21. Only eight kills were reported by the Whakatane inspector, Mr. H. A. Burgess. Present at the meeting were Messrs. E. M. Monckton, chairman, G. M. Reynolds, M. L. Holden. H. Bayly, H. C. Nolan and F. R. Bould.
