WAIROA SHOW

FINE _STOCK BIG CROWD ATTENDS SHOWERS THIS MORNING (Herald Special Reporter.) WAIROA, Jan. 19. The sky was overcast to-day and the weather conditions for the grand victory Show of the Wairoa A. and F. Society were much cooler than have been experienced in the district for some days. A strong north-westerly wind made a reduction in the temperature, and in the early part of the day the conditions were ideal, but at 11 o’clock intermittent showers of rain began to fall and it was expected that this would materially affect the gate takings.

Due to the large number of entries, judging was commenced at an earlier hour than usual. Taken generally, the entries in the various stock sections will most probably in the judges’ opinions surpass in quality those penned in past years at Wairoa. In the Hereford cattle Messrs. Hutchinson Bros., Gisborne, produced very fine stock indeed. A supporter for many years of the Wairoa Society, Mr. R. E. Jefferson, is again to the fore with splendid true to type Hereford breeding stock. The Aberdeen-Angus section has not drawn very keen competition, the entries being practically confined to the R. J, Powdrell Estate, Mr. Humphrey Bayly, president of the society, and Mr. R. E. Jefferson. So far as the dairy section is concerned, Jersey breeding is well represented. Interest in Competitions As usual tlie competitions are providing most interest for the onlookers. The entries in this section total over 170. Shortly after noon a start was made with the maiden jump, which drew the satisfactory entry of 40 competitors. The sheep entries, which were provided with ample shelter from the heat of the day by the shade from the trees which were wisely planted by the society, were of a very fine type and the various judges were loud in their praise of the fastitiousness of the breeding shown, keenest competition being displayed in the Southdowns. Fat sheep, butchers’ classes,_ flock sheep and lambs added to the interest of the exhibits, whilst the dog section, which was not strongly supported in numbers, did not lack in quality, according to the judges Mesdames M. N. McVernon and F. Redfearn.

Farmers’ products and the industrial exhibition is proving most popular with those attending the Show, the produce shed being thronged with visitors throughout the day.

Due to the courtesy of the Railway Department, the society has been particularly fortunate in securing a special railcar to return the visitors from the Gisborne district, who displayed keen interest in the proceedings throughout the day.
