VISIT TO GISBORNE
MJR.-GEN. SIR JOHN DUIGAN
Major-General Sir John Duigan, K.8.E., C.B. D. 5.0., a former Chief of the General Staff, is at present on a visit to Gisborne as the gues.t of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. Duigan, 452 Palmerston road. General Duigan intends to stay in Gisborne for a few weeks before leaving for England, where he will remain for several months, returning to this country perhaps later this year. General Duigan’s military service goes back to the South African War, in which h e fought at the age of 18. On his return he became a cadet in the permanent forces and was commissioned in 1905, He served with the Ist N.Z.E.F. and later was an instructor at the senior officers’ school, Aldershot, after which he made a propaganda tour of the United States. He became chief of staff, Northern Command, N.Z., 1919, O.C. of the command in 1930, A.D.C. to the King in 1936, and G.O.C. N.Z. Forces in 1937, from which post he retired in 1943.
