TURKEY EASIER

RUSSIAN CLAIMS CONTROL OF STRAITS EAST BORDER RIGHTS LONDON, Jan. 15. Turkey, now that the General Assembly of the United Nations is meeting, feels easier over Russias reported aspirations regarding the Dardanelles and the Turkish eastern frontier districts facing Georgia and Armenia, says the Daily Mail’s diplomatic correspondent. It is believed that the Turkish delegation at UNO will not raise the question of Russian claims. Turkey is apparently dividing them into two categories. It appears that she expects Russia to drop her claims in the east if Turkey concedes something regarding the Straits. Turkey has accepted in principle the suggestion, which Britain and America supported, that a revision of the Montreux Convention governing the present control of the Straits is now necessary, but that such a revision must pay due regard to Turkey’s rights, sovereignty and her eastern frontier. It is expected that the Turkish delegates to UNO will •place before Mr. Bevin, Mr. Byrnes and the Russian delegates what they consider first-class evidence refuting the claims put forward by Russian Georgians and the Armenians.
