CUP CANDIDATES

TRENTHAM TRIALS G. SOUVENIR PLEASES TUIS’ BRILLIANT FIVE A brilliant five furlongs by the Telegraph Handicap favourite Tuis. and a solid mile by the cup horses Golden Souvenir. GlcnLilkidi and Expanse, wore tho mam attractions at Trenthnm on Tuesday morning. A cold wind was blowing from tho north ami this assisted the horses in the run home. The tracks were fast, the plough being purlieulaiiv so. Glcnfnlloch on the inside. Golden Souvenir in the middle, and Expanse on the outride wont from the mile ami a-qunrter post, but there was little pace for tho first two furlongs. They ran from tile mile to the half-mile in >2#sec. and completed the mile in J.13:-*. the last three furlongs in 38r.ee. Expanse lost a little ground making tiic home turn, and at the finish was two lengths behind Golden Souvenir and Glenfalloeh, who finished almost in terms. It was a good trial. Golden Souvenir, who struck himself on Monday, was feeling the ground before lie worked, but he hit out freely enough once he warmed up, and as. on Saturday he was doing his best work at the finish. Glenfaliocli also worked soundly. He has not been quite good enough for the handicap stayers in big events this season, but he looks fit enough to stage a return to form at. any moment. He will lie ridden in the Wellington Cup by N. B. Hoiland. _ Western Front Goes. Well Though beaten in his trial, Expanse performed satisfactorily. He is a lazy worker and his failure to finish on terms with Golden Souvenir and Glcnfnlloch did not perturb his trainer.

Two other cup candidates. Silver Sal and Western Front, were also worked over a mile and a quarter, with the pace on for the final mile, which they covered in 1.463. They finished almost on terms and were running on well to record- 51 see for the last half. Western Front is not a Rood track worker and his effort greatly pleased his trainer, J. Mitchell. Working alone, Tuis, favourite for the Telegraph Handicap, ran five fur lon res on the plough in 1.2, the last three in 36sec. Tuis is a very fit marc and she finished her task with resolution. She is a brilliant beginner and In her present form must have a great chance of adding to her record. Colais was pal loped six furlongs on the grass, running the last four in Sljlscc. So far Colais has shown no signs of a recurrence of his bleeding trouble, either in the two races he has had or in his work. He is a wellperformed horse, but he may need a stiffer test before the experimental operation performed on him can be described as a complete success. _ . Caithness Impressive Caithness and Master Dash were companions over six furlongs on the plough in 1.16. They came home the last three in 36sec and were doing it nicely at the finish, especially Caithness, Gold Lad, a visitor from Hastings, and who was a winner during the holidays, ran half a mile down the back iij, HOI sec. Repudiate ran a straight half-mile, finishing strongly to cover the last three furlongs in 39$sec. The Monarch put plenty of dash into his work on the plough when he heat Jolly Gcodfellow by two lengths over six furlongs in 1.213* Blue Bonny and Omit were on terms at the end of half a mile on the plough in 49scc. Big Money shaded Montosorrie in similar time. Al-Sirat had to be kept to his work to finish on terms with Donegal Bay in 49£sec. Donegal Bay worked freely and has improved since she raced at the New Year. Baffling, with a weight advantage of more than 3st., was a head in front of Bruce at the end of six furlongs on the course proper in I.lS*. Two-year-olds Sprint On the same track the two-year-olds Zelander aend Royal Tan sprinted three furlongs in 36sec. Zelander is the Foxbridge colt out of Gay Blonde. Royal Tan is a brother to Bruce. On the plough, Master Baron beat Gyration narrowly over half a mile in 49£soc. Barrage completed his work by running home half a mile with Royal Baron in 49?,sec. Riverview and Balchcrrie ran an easy six furlongs, the last four taking 54sec. Deprive was restricted to a round of pace work. He has thrived on the racing and travelling he has had and is one of the fittest horses at Trenthnm. Corrychoillie and Hormuz ran the last three of six furlongs in 39&sec. On the course proper, Blue Tie had to be kept going to finish on terms with Theio Light at the end of half a mile in SOscc., the last three in 36*saec. Blue Tie is to run in the Fitzherbcrt Handicap, which is confined to two-year-old fillies. Riccarton Trials

Irish Note and Miss Medley were companions in a gallop over nine furlongs at Riccarton, taking 1.57 1-5. They ran the first four in 53 1-5, and tho last four in 51 1-5. Irish Note had a slight advantage throughout, and while lie was not ridden out, Miss Medley, who lias never been a good track worker on the plough, was under pressure to keep within a length of her companion.

Irish Note’s work was most impressive. Ho has not entered into serious discussion as a Wellington Cup possibility, as it has been considered he has not had sufficient racing to assist in his preparation for a two-mile ordeal. This week’s gallop indicated that he is more forward than generally oxpected, and that he must be regarded as likely to master the journey. He will be ridden at Trentham by A. C. Messervy, who rode him in his two successes at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Miss Medley has come through her preparation successfully. No notice need be taken of this gallop.

Lord Elgon, with his trainer, G. Ridgway, in the saddle, was going much better than Peculate at the end of six furlongs in 1.16 3-5, the first three in 36 3-5. The class in tho Wellington Stakes may be too rich for Lord Elgin, but lie may show up later at the meeting. Record Voyage and Dash o’ Dink were associated in a smart effort over seven furlongs in 1.29 2-5, the first four in 49 3-5. Tho former shows the benefit of his successful trip to the West Coast circuit, and may carry on at Trentham, where he will be ridden by G. Hampton. Piccolo showed the way to Appeasement over half a mile in 50 3-5. Blue Trout was under a strong hold while sprinting four furlongs in 49 3-5, the last three in 32 2-5. She was shipped north recently, and is expected to strip in her best order on Saturday. Riding Engagements
