U.S. NEWS SERVICES

RADIO TRANSMISSION

CHEAP RATES PROPOSED

AUTHORITY SOUGHT

(10 a.m.) , NEW YORK, Dec. 17. The president of the American Cable and Radio Corporation, Mr. Warren A. Lee Pierson, announced that Mackay Radio, which is a subsidiary, has filed an application to the Federal Communications Commission for a tariff schedule that would reduce the cost of world transmission of American news to about one-third of a cent per word. Describing the move as the first major step toward making American news available throughout the world for distribution at the lowest rates in communications history, Mr. Pierson said the new service contemplated using the Mackay radio’s high-power transmitters in New York and San Francisco, “to blanket the world's far corners with news and information for simultaneous reception at authorised receiving points.” A feature of the proposed service is the use of relay or booster stations in the European and Pacific areas to assure continuous satisfactory radio reception of American news at all times.
