HIRE-AND-FIRE MOTION
DISAGREEMENT VOICED
CANTERBURY E.F.C.A
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 17. The Canterbury branch of the Engine Drivers. Firemen and Cleaners' Association has dissociated itself from the proposed resolution of the Canterbury and fire.
branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants on the right to hire The following statement was issued yesterday over the signature of Mr. John Ryall, chairman, and Mr. J. R. Dunmell, secretary, of the branch: “The Canterbury branch of the E.F.C.A. wish to dissociate themselves in every way from the proposed motion of the Canterbury branch of the A.S.R.S. After mature consideration of the points raised, principally the stop-work proposal, we consider that although we hold with the right to hold a stop-work meeting, that right must not be abused and must positively be one of the last resources after all other means have failed.
“A hold-up of this nature means a great loss to the Railway Department, and it is quite unjust to inflict this loss upon it if sufficient provocation nas not been given “Moreover, a hold-up of this nature is very likely to affect other unoffending workers, and the general public suffers serious inconvenience. Social justice concerns not only the duties of the employer to his employees, but the employees have also a social duty to consider the good of the community. “We consider we have always been well heard on the railway appeal boards, on which we have elected members sitting, and nothing points to any fact that would make us consider that we will not receive justice for any of our members in the future.”
