At a mooting of the Wniroa Hospital fronrtl on Wednesday the secretary, Mr. K. A, Peer., reported that the births at the matenmy annexe for the last six months totalled IG3. The figures for the same periods in past years are as follows: 19*11, 131; 1942, 11G; 1943, 113; 1944, 130; 1945, 103. It will be noted that the increase over the years 1942 and 1943 is approximately GO per cent. Toe secretary estimated that the birthrate for the year will bo 400, or over one a day, which is much in excess of the number the board estimated when the annexe was established. At Wednesday’s meeting of the Woiron Hospitnl Board, the sister in charge of the maternity annexe, Miss L. Corkill, wrote agreeing to defer her resignation for 12 months, adding that the staff situation, which had been causing her considerable concern, had now greatly improved. Members cxp?esscd their gratification at Miss Corkill’s favourable consideration of the board’s request to reconsider her resignation.

The death has occurred at the Wniroa Hospital of Mr. Arthur William Carrick at the age of 71 years, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Carrick was on the hydro-electric staff of the Works Department at Tuai for over 10 years and was very popular with a large circle of friends. For a number of years ho was president of the Tuai Bowling Club and rendered that club great service. In addition to his widow, Mr. Carrick leaves a family of four sons and two daughters to mourn their loss. Mrs. J. Joe, accompanied by her son, Private 11. Corskie, is on a visit to the South Island.—Mr. J. E. Svensen, Wniroa, left on Monday on a visit to Melbourne. —Miss J. Cordon. Lower Hutt, has been on a visit to her mother, Mrs. J. Cordon, Wniroa.—Corporal R. Lunney. R.N.Z.A.F., who recently returned from the Pacific, has arrived at Wniroa.
