MAORI PETITIONS

TREATY OF WAITANGI

STATUTORY RECOGNITION (P.R.) WELLINGTON. Oct. 20.

Maori petitions praying that statutory recognition be given to the Treaty of Waitangi were reported upon to the House of Representatives yesterday by the Maori Affairs Committee.

The chairman of the committee, Mr. L. G. Lowry (Govt., Olaki) said he had been directed to report that, in the opinion of the committee, the petitions should be referred to the .Government with a recommendation that, in recognition of the courageous service rendered by the Maori people to the British Commonwealth during two world wars and as part of the Dominion's peace celebrations and also to express the sentiment of friendship binding the pakeha and Maori peoples, the Treaty of Waitangi be published as a sacred re-affirmation of the agreement signed by Governor Hobson and the Maori representatives, and that copies of this memorial be hung in all schools throughout the Dominion and in all Maori meeting places.
