RIFLE SHOOTING

VICTORY PRIZE MEETING CHAMPIONSHIP TO REVELL The second annual East Coast outdoor smallbore championship was contested on the Sponge Bay rifle range during the Labour Day week-end, when the Gisborne Miniature lwitie Club promoted a victory prize meeting. Extensive preparations were made by the executive to ensure that the conduct, contioj and general arrangements of the fixture would give complete satisfaction and it was greatly disappointing that the very unfavourable weather conditions marred what was otherwise a mo t successful event. The meeting was made sufficiently attracfive to draw rrnresenNative teams from W el-lin-ion. Carterton. Mangatainoka. Hastings and Napier and the strong support given by ttoanw. together with satisfactory entries from lending local riflemen, enabled the full programme being proceeded with. Amongst the competitors were Mrs. Sutcliffe, winner of the 1045 New Zealand ladies mdoui* championship, W. J. Burton and Congreve, who were the 1035 and 1936 winners of the New Zealand outdoor championship, and F. J. Jcunc, winner on four occasions of the Gisborne club’s indoor championship. The championship resulted in a well-merited and very popular win for G. A. Revel 1. Gisborne, who, despite the difficult conditions, was responsible for a high standard of scoring in each of the five matches. Rcvcll has maintained remarkable form during the present season, in which lie has recorded the possible score on no less than 11 occasions m club shooting. Some Outstanding Performances Throughout the various matches there wore some outstanding individual performances, chief amongst which was Mrs. E. B. W hue s (Brooklyn) splendid “possible” at 50yds., the only maximum score registered throughout tne programme, and to prove that her s was by no means a “fluke” Mrs. White again topscored at the difficult 100yds. range with an exceptional target of 43. R* Congreve (Brooklyn) was also responsible for a noteworthy 40 at the 50yds. range. The champion team’s match produced a decisive win for the Gisborne club, whose teams filled both first and second places, while the ladies’ championship went to Mrs. R. Burson, Gisborne. The first match was contested from the scratch mark, after which handicaps were declared for the remainder of the programme. The system employed was the prize-money automatic handicapper and was most enthusiastically commented upon by all present. The invitation teams’ match, which was held at the Gisborne club’s rooms, provided a suitable opportunity for the presentation of prizes. Below the list of prize-winners, the visitors Ik Y.g identified thus: Brooklyn, Wellington, IB), Carterton (C), Mangatamoka (M). Hastings (H), Napier (N).
