STREET APPEALS
“CURRY-COMB” NEEDED “PROTECT THE PEOPLE’' “The time has come when we should run a curry-comb through the applications for street day appeals,” declared Mr. G. J. Jeune at last night’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council. This remark was prompted when a request was received from the Taxitimu.Sea Scout Group for permission to conduct a “bring and buy” sale at the patriotic hut, Peel street, on Friday, November 23, and the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, had asked if this would clash with a street appeal to be conducted by the Red Cross Society during November. “Every Friday people are being stopped and asked to contribute to some cause . . ,” Mr Jeune commenced when Mr. H. H. De Costa interposed: "This is confined to the patriotic hut and is not an appeal.” “There has been reference to an appeal that month,” Mr. Jeune replied. “The time is coming when we should take stock of the position. People are not reluctant to give for patriotic purposes, but it seems that every society that exists stops people each Friday for donations.” Mr. Bull: Not each Friday! "There have been street collections the last two Fridays, and neither of them were for patriotic purposes,” Mr. Jeune pointed out. Mr. De Costa: They were both for worthy causes. “Yes, they were both for worthy causes,” Mr. Jeune agreed, “but the people who do their business in town on a Friday need a little protection. ’ Discussion on this line then lapsed, and permission was granted for the conducting nf the sale.
