BUSIEST MONTH

REHABILITATION LOANS A RECORD GRAND TOTAL £9,541,197 (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 24. With an increase of almost £150.000 over the previous month's figures, July was by far the busiest month for loan authorisations so far made to cxservicamen and women, states the monthly review of the Rehabilitation Department. Altogether loans totalling £914.329 were authorised during the month, as against the previous month's record total of £769 280. This brought the grand total of loan authorisation made to the end of July to £9.541,107. Of this £9,043,770 has been to men returned from overseas service and £6319 to returned service women. Home service personnel have benefited to the extent of £378.997, merchant seamen £40.922 and widows and defendants of deceased servicemen £70.609. The number assisted by way ef loans during Julv was 1149 bringing the total so assisted to 14.765. of whom, apart from seamen, 13,440 had had service overseas. Eighty-nine ex-servicemen were assisted to nurchase farms to a total vaiue of £341.662. bringing the total of financed farms to 1044 at a cost of £3,537,509. Building or Buying Homes By far the greatest increase during the month was shown in the number of loans for building or buying homes, the total for the month being 392, valued at £457.072. Of these loans 168. valued at £230,933, were for the erection of houses and 224, valued at £226.139. were for the purchase of existing dwellings. The total number of housing loans now authorised is 4091, involving £4,514,271. Included in this are 2104 interest-free supplementary loans totalling £332,746, of which 231,, totalling £34,795, were authorised during July. A total of 111 ex-servicemen and one ex-servicewoman were assisted during Julv to set up in businesses by being granted loans aggregating £66 919. This brings the businesses established to 1712, involving £794.997. During July 524 were authorised to use the £IOO interest-free furniture loan, involving £47 408, bringing the total of furniture loans to 7305, valued at £666,556 Twenty-eight loans, totalling £B/7. were made for the purchase of tools of trade, making the aggregate of these loans 529 representing £16,104. Four advances for miscellaneous purposes, totalling £391. were made, making a total of 84 loans of this nature, involving £11,760.
