Dyrnock, Puhn, and Dawn, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Cowan, Makarori, Gisborne. Hyde—Walters.—An engagement Is announced between Jack Edwin, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Hyde, Shirley, Christchurch, and Catherine Eleanor only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. I\ Walters, Gisborne. NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN Business was dispatched under the direction of Mrs. W. E. (Jolie at the monthly meeting of the Gisborne branch of the National Council of Women held in the committee room at the Gisbornh Women's Club on Thursday afternoon. Reports were received from the Dunedin branch in regard to domestic economy, and also a report on education from Mrs. Gillies, who represented the N.C.W. at the education conference held in Christchurch. The following remit was forwarded by the New Plymouth branch for consideration, "That the sales tax be lifted from the clothes of children up to the age of 16 years." The milk question was discussed and the meeting agreed to forward its decision to the Dominion secretary, Mrs. McKay, at a later date. Afternoon ten was served by Mrs. Grant. FAREWELL PARTY Recently Mrs. E. M. Monckton, who is shortly making her future home in Gisborne, was fare welled by her follow-members of the Ngatapa Women's Institute at a delightful party, held at the home of Mrs. A. H. Russell, Ngatapa. Bowls of jnponlcn provided an artistic decorative .cheme i nd a large log fire added to the atmosphere of cheer. A delicious afternoon tea was served, and later the president of the institute, Mrs. F. Briant, asked the chief guest to accept a fountain pen and a bouquet of pink winter roses, daphne and stock ns a tangible token ot the appreciation of her services to the institute during her four years’ term of office as president. Mrs. Briant also conveyed to Mrs. Monckton the good wishes of her fellow-mem-bers for her future happiness. In miking acknowledgment, Mrs. Monckton. who was accorded musical honours, expressed n wish to remain a member of the institute. She also thanked Mrs. Russell for her much enjoyed hospitality. PARTIES FOR BRIDE-ELECT Spring flowers were artistically arranged by Mrs. R. Sherwood Hale at her home in Tokomaru Bay recently, when she combined with Mrs. G. Plummer and Mrs. W. Vy. Williams in giving a delightful "miscellaneous" gift party for Miss J. Jefferd, whose marriage to Major C. M. Monckton will take place shortly. After tea the bride-to-be, assisted by a number of juvenile guests, opened the array of inviting-looking gift parcels. Mrs. Hale was wearing a smart frock ot black wool georgette. A graceful frock of green wool cloque was the choice of Mrs. Plummer, and Mils. Williams wore an elegant rust red frock. Mins Jefferd’s becoming black frock was worn with a coat to match. Miss Jefferd was also the chief guest at another large "miscellaneous" gift tea given hy Mrs. J. L. Reeves, Mrs. A. J. Reid. Mrs. R. H. Fraser, Mrs. A. H; Reeves and Mrs. N. S. Thomas at the home of Mrs. J. L. Reeves, Tolaga Bay. Spring flowers and blossom were effectively arranged in the sitting-room, and here progressive bridge was enjoyed by the guests. The gift parcels were Inter opened by the bride-to-be, revealing a varied assortment of pretty and useful articles. A graceful frock of black wool georgette, with white accents, was worn by Mrs. J. L. Reeves. Miss Jefferd wore a smart black and white checked suit with a straw hat to match and silver fox furs. SUCCESSFUL DANCE Artistic decorations of rhododendrons a*ui camellias in shades of red and white, the school colours, formed an effective setting at Le Grand Cafe last night for the delightful dance organised by the girls of Woodford House School at present home for the term holidays. The function, which is held anntlally for the benefit of the fund sponsored by the school to provide honey for the merchant navy, was, rke its predecessors, a complete success. Miss Lena Ruru's orchestra supplied the music, and extras were contributed by several of the guests. Included in the programme were novelty numbers. A buffet supper was *'erved.
