OBITUARY

MR. GILBERT CARR

The death occurred at the Cook Hospital yesterday of- Mr. Gilbert Brown Carr, at the age of 64 years, after long residence in Gisborne. Mr. Carr retired from active work five years ago, but previously worked as a marine engineer and machinist for 30 years. Born at Naffa, Victoria, he was apprenticed to the engineering trade after completing his schooling, and on qualifying as a journeyman came to New Zealand. He settled in Gisborne and was for many years employed on the tug Hipi as engineer, later continuing in the employment of the Gisborne Refrigerating Company ; until his retirement through a gradual failing of his health. He lived at Hexton for 30 years, and recently entered the Cook Hospital for treatment.

Mr. Carr took a keen interest in the Druids’ Lodge, and in other local organisations. Surviving' members of his family comprise three daughters, Mrs. Erikson, Hexton, Mrs. F ; Kerr, Gisborne, and Miss N. Carr, Gisborne, and three sons. Mr. L. Carr, 2nd N.Z.E.F., Mr. R. Carr, Tolaga Bay, and Mr. T. Carr, Hexton. .There are five grandchildren. The funeral is to tafie place today, leaving Cochrane’s mortuary after a service at 3.15 p.m., for the Taruheru cemetery.

MRS. H. C. HUGHES

The death of Mrs. Hannah Catherine Hughes, widow of the late Mr. Charles Williams Hughes, occurred at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J. Towers, on Thursday. Eighty-four years of age, Mrs. Hughes came to New Zealand in 1920 from Manchester, England. She was l of a very quiet disposition and was well-liked by all with whom she came in contact. Her husband died five years ago. Left to mourn their loss are four sons, Mr. H. Hughes, Weir lington, Messrs. William, Arthur and James Hughes, Gisborne, and three daughters, Mrs. J. Towers, Gisborne, Mrs. -E. Auld, Ruawai, and Mrs. L. Cohan, Tauranga. The funeral will take place at the Taruheru cemetery, following a service in Cochrane’s chapel. William street, at 1.45 p.m. to-day.

MRS. IDA M. BELL

The death occurred to-day of Mrs. Ida Mary Bell, widow of the late Mr. A. G. Bell, at the age of 73 years. Mrs. Bell had been in hospital for some weeks, and had steadily declined since the death of her husband last month.

The deceased was of a retiring disposition, but was much respected in the district, where she had lived most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Gilbert Honeywood Norris, formerly well-known in the community, and was born in Gisborne. She married Mr. Bell in Gisborne, and had one son, Major G. H. Bell, now serving with the New Zealand Forces in Italy. One brother, Mr. C. H. Norris, Waipaoa, and two sisters, Mrs. E. Reynolds, Gisborne, and Mrs. E. Partridge, Toowoomba, Australia, are surviving. ' One sister, Mrs. N. Kane, predeceased Mrs. Bell. There is to be a service in Cochrane’s chapel at 11 a.m. on Monday, after which the funeral will leave for the Taruheru cemetery.

MRS. MARY ROBINSON

|'P.A.) DUNEDIN. June 30. The last surviving member of a nioneering family of 16 children, Mrs. Mary Robinson, died yesterday aged 87 years. Twice married, she had 11 children. 45 grandchildren, 52 greatgrandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Of these, one son. 10 grandsons and three great-grandsons have served overseas in the present war. Canada's famous airman. Air Marshal Bishop, V.C.. is a nephew.
