RETENTION IN U.S.
AXIS WAR PRISONERS WASHINGTON, June 28. Able-bodied prisoners of war would be retained in the United States as long as American man-power is not available to replace them in essential work. '
In announcing this, the War Department added that there were 421,2111 Italian and German prisoners in the United States on June 1 of whom about 3000 sick, unfit and wounded will be returned to Europe in the coming summer. About 225,000 have been assigned to work on military and naval installations and 155,000 have been assigned to agricultural work.
