THIS FREEDOM!

Sir, —The Gisborne branch of the Labour Party, if it was correctly reported in the Herald, believes that people will retain their freedom as long ns the present Government remains in power. What wonderful optimism! I am back in New Zealand after tour years overseas and it seems to me that freedom is as scarce as hen's teeth. At present I am not even allowed to work where I want to. After fighting for freedom, or so I am told, I find I am a slave, of the manpower officials. Of course this is just ft war measure. I wonder! Anyhow I have been looking round to make plans to use the freedom I fought for. I would like to stait a little fishing business, but I am told that the only ones who have freedom to Make money at this are the foreigners to whom the present Government' has given a monopoly. I jiossibly lost some of my chances by fightfor freedom and I do not know what I am good for—except that I am not a bad fisherman. But I do not want to catch fish to make money for foreigners: I want freedom to start for myself. Then,' take the case of a “Kiwi” friend of mine. Before the war he was a milk vendor and he had ideas of starting up in business again. When he made inquiries lie was told that the only freedom lie had was to try and buy out someone else —at a pretty good profit—but he wants freedom to start his own business. There is nothing doing for him either, because the milk business also is iu the hands of another monopoly created by the present Government: Perhaps the Labour Party will tell us where is this freedom they talk about. If this ’a freedom, give me good old dictatorship every time. —KIWI.
