CARNIVAL QUEENS

PATRIOTIC EFFORT GISBORNE~ZONE PLAN CAN DI DATES”NOM IN ATED When last year’s highly successful patriotic queen carnival was concluded, the hope was expressed that the people of the district would not again be called upon to organise and support a similar major effort. The hooe that the war would be practically over by the turn of the year has not materialised, and it is obvious that there will be a call for patriotic funds during the current year at least on the same scale as for the earlier years of the war. To meet this demand, and also to provide portion of the finance needed for after-war welfare work for soldiers of the district, zone committees throughout the district are hard at work with various schemes. The Gisborne zone committee’s project is to raise the whole of its quota of the provincial total by another queen carnival, and preparations have been completed for the opening of a fourweeks effort commencing next Friday. Three Big- Organisations Three candidates representing Navy. Army and Air Force respectively will head the respective organisations enlisted in the effort, and the widespread character of the campaign is best indicated by the groups behind these candidates, as under:— Navy.-—Candidate. Miss June Dods; colours, navy blue and white. Chairman of committee, Mr. I. J. Quigley. Candidate sponsored by the N.Z. Red Cross Society. St. John Ambulance Association, Student Nurses’ Association, National Council of Women. . Women’s National Reserve, Teachers' Institute, Townswomen’s Guild, Poverty Bay Gardening Circle, and the Gisborne Boxing Association. Army.—Candidate, Miss Jan Williams: colours, khaki and scarlet. Chairman of committee, Mr. A. H. Barwick. Candidate sponsored by R.S.A. social committee, Registered Nurses’ Association, and Tairawhiti Kiwi Maori Association. Air Force.—Candidate, Miss Meg Armstrong; colours, Air Force blue. Joint chairmen of committee. Messrs. R. R. Allan and M. W. Howe. Candidate sponsored by the Chinese community. the Victoria League, Plunket Society, Poverty Bay Ladies’ Golf Club. Te Hapara Sewing Circle. Girls’ rnterhouse Sports Association, and the Home Services’ Association. Official Opening on Friday The campaign will be officially opened next Friday evening, when the respective candidates will be introduced by the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, from a. dais in Peel street, as one of the features of a carnival evening for which portion of Peel street will be closed to vehicular traffic. Concert parties, bands, and other forms of entertainment will be offered to the public on this occasion, and it is expected {hat the evening function will set the level on which the whole campaign will proceed. An endeavour is being made to secure the co-operation of everyone in the community, in order to make the effort a complete success. Several organisations which have not been named as sponsors for any of the candidates have undertaken to give nil-round support to the carnival, and arrange special facilities for those engaged in the detailed work of organising the carnival.

The Gisborne zone committee is arranging l'or a handsome art union prize, for which tickets will be sold by. all three queen committees and their supporters, and there will also be a number of other competitions proceeding throughout the campaign. An interesting innovation which will assist the Army candidate’s funds is the open-air amusement park established by the R.S.A. committee in conjunction with registered showmen. This effort was originally ■to have been made on behalf of the R.S.A. building fund, for which a substantial sum is still required. The committee has agreed, however, that for the duration of the queen carnival 50 per cent of its revenue from the amusement park will be applied to support the Army queen. It is expected that the yield from this source will be substantial.
