MEAGRE FIRE DAMAGE
U.S, RAID ON KOBE JAP. DEFENCES GOOD (9 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 7. The United Press correspondent on Guam says that although pictures which were taken during the bombing of Kobe on Sunday showed 35 fires, reconnaissance pictures on Monday revealed that the fires had been quelled and that meagre damage had been done. This emphasises tbe successful Japanese home defence and also discounts the popular conception that Japanese cities arc fire-traps, especially as high winds ruled during Sunday’s raid. The Tokio radio stated that 21 Lightnings and Mitchells raided the Balikpapan oil refineries in daylight to-day but dropped their bombs in the suburbs and (led from the Japanese interceptors. A single Super-Fortress bombed the Kobe naval base from midnight to 1.40 a.m.
