BURMA-SIAM RAILWAY DESTRUCTION OF BRIDGES (10.30 a.m.) RUGBY, Feb. 8. South-east Asia Headquarters state: “Heavy bombers of the Eastern An Command on Wednesday destroyed two main and three by-pass bridges on the Burma-Siam railway. Japanese strong-points and a radio station in the Mandalay sector were bombed and strafed. In the northern combat area tanks and troop supplies were attacked and in Arakan guns and'defences were hit. Road and rail traffic was strafed in Burma and Siam. ■ “Against stiff opposition 18th Indian Corps troops made a further advance towards Ramree town. On the right flahk' in Ramree Island our troops are advancing south of Yanbauk Chaung. “South-east of Minbya, West African troops are encountering opposition. There has been a lull in the fighting at the 14th Army bridgeheads east of the Irrawaddy. In all sectors there was active patrolling. “There is no change in the position On the Burma Road, where the Chinese 38th Division and General Mars’ task force were engaged. In the area of the 50th Chinese Division there was patrolling south and east of Molo.”
