GOEBBELS’ SILENCE
BERLIN SPECULATION NO APPEALS IN CRISIS (10 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 8. The silence of Dr. Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda, in Germany’s crisis is causing speculation, according to the Evening Standard’s correspondent in Stockholm. Berliners are beginning to wonder why Dr. Goebbels who, as gauleiter of Berlin, should be more prominent than ever, fails to add his exhortations to those of other German leaders, including Dr. Ley, who produced flaming appeals to Berlin’s population this week. Dr. Goebbels, instead, kept quiet except for his usual editorial contribution to Das Reich which Berliners now doubt whether he wrote. Some interpret his silence as the usual fence-sitting in a critical situation, though other rumors say that he has had a nervous breakdown.
