FREED ALLIED CITIZENS RELIEF IN’ MANILA (9 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 8. The Under-Secretary of State, Mr. Joseph Grew, told a press conference that General MacArthur had informed the War and State Departments that persons liberated in the Philippines will be permitted to return home as soon as the military situation permits. General MacArthur had also advised that he had taken all appropriate welfare measures for all United Nations’ citizens. Mr. Grew also announced that the relief ship Awa Maru is leaving Japan on February 17 under a safe conduct with supplies for Allied nationals in Formosa, Hongkong, Saigon, Singapore, Sourabaya and Batavia.
