STATEMENT PENDING

MR. WHITE CRITICISED j (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 9. The following statement was made last night by Sir James Elliott, chairman of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society: "Mr. C. G. White is j not the chairman of the Joint Council. 1 He is a member of the emergency committee of the Joint Council and he attended a meeting of that committee two days ago and was most: insistent that no public statement I should be made by anyone to the press ■ until after the meeting of the Joint Council next week. As already published in the press, after this meeting, a statement is to be prepared for pub-! lication by a sub-committee com-! prising Mr. White, Mr. J. T. Spears | and myself. It is thus evident that 1 Mr White has repudiated both his own proposal and his colleagues’ at one fell swoop. It is rather regrettable that his public statement is generally misleading.”
