LIVING IN CHUNGKING CHUNGKING, Feb. 5. The cost of living in Chungking touched a new high level with a single egg costing 24 Chinese dollars, says the Associated Press. The official exchange rate is 20 dollars to one American dollar, but the black market rate is 400 to one. Pork costs 180 Chinese dollars per pound. Landlords, tearing that they might be caught short if the war ends in 1945, now charge two years’ rent in advance. In a typical case, a tenant paid 400,000 Chinese dollars for 19454G for two small rooms, a tiny kitchen and no bathroom.
