RAM FAIR OPENS
TWO-DAY OFFERING SHOW PENS”SELL WELL The firet ram fair to be held by the Gisborne Stud Sheep Brooders’ Association opened at the showgrounds this morning. Some 845 dock Romneys were being offered to-day and the disposal to-morrow will cover about 330 (lock Southdowns. Bidding was slow at the outset this morning, but as the bench of buyers became larger the safe took a brisk turn ami bidding became more spirited for the best quality offerings. A feature of the fair was the institution for the first time of show pens of four 1-shear rams which created a good Heal of interest among buyers. There were 21 of these and judging was carried out by Mr. lan Donald, Feathci'stone. The innovation was welcomed by buyers, who were enabled to inspect the pick of the (locks of breeders selling at tile fair.
Top price in the show section was secured by the first prize-winner, Mr. G. V. Smith, Gisborne, the purchaser at 13Jgns. being Mr. E. C. Miller, Papakura. Thirteen guineas was paid by Mr. Smith for the second lien bred by Mr. A. Kirkpatrick. Patutahi, and the next highest price was 121gns. for the fifth pen bred by Mr. H. J, Raynor, Mastevton, and purchased by Mr. \V. Hegarty. Gisborne. Mrs. E. Davidson. Gisborne. paid llfjgns. for another of Mr. Raynor's pens placed fourth. The third pen, bred by Mr. Kirkoatrick, was secured by Mr. E. Reeves, Tolaga Bay, for lOJgns. Other sales were: —G. Buchanan, Halcombe: Five 1-shear, ficus.; 5 do.. Signs. J. C.
