U.S. CIVIL RAIL TRIPS DEMANDS OF SERVICES (10 a.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 7. To curtail non-essential travel, the Director of War Mobilisation, Mr. James Byrnes, has proposed the cancellation of all conventions after February 1, requiring the attendance of more than JO persons. He has also asked the general public !o defer unnecessary trips. He pointed out that the railroad passenger miles were Ski,ooo,ooo in 10-14, compared with 20,000,000 in 1941. The armed services are using 10 to 15 ber cent of the railway coaches and about 50 per cent of the sleepers.
