FORAY IN DAYLIGHT

POLES ACROSS THE MAAS NAZI DEFENCES PROBED flO a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 7. Two small groups of Poles attached to the Canadian First Army rowed across the Maas River near Heusden in daylight to-day to probe the enemy defences, says the Associated Press correspondent. They ran into heavy machine-gun fire, but German artillery did not go into action when Canadian tanks rolled up the riverbank and laid down a crashing barrage. Royal Air Force planes attacked ahead of thejroops. Several patrols have crossed the Maas River at night-time, but this is the first time the river has been raided in daylight.
