Ho was aged 29 and was educated at the Gisborne Central School and the Gisborne lliuh School. He left New Zealand in July, 1943. alter serving for some years 'in Uie Territorial Forces. Second-Lieutenant Ball resigned a Territorial commission to go overseas end was later commissioned on active service.
