AUSTRALIAN NAVY
LATEST TYPE DESTROYER VESSEL IN HOME WATERS SYDNEY, Dec. 2G. H.M.A.S. Quickmatch, otic of the Australian Navy’s latest type of fleet destroyers, is in home waters for the first time since she was commissioned in September, 1942. For two years she has served with Britain’s Eastern Fleet. Her armament is specially designed for her main task of escorting the heavy ships of the fleet and she has a greater range than previous destroyers of this type. , , The Quickmatch was built at Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. She was commissioned with a crew specially sent from Australia. Her ship’s company will be given leave in rotation while she is in Australia. Some of them have served in her throughout her career, but the navy’s policy of mingling men in different shipshas taken most of the originals from the vessel. The destroyer’s most recent action was the raid on Sabang (north of Sumatra) in July. 1944,
