FIERCE SYDNEY BRAWL

COMBATANTS USE KNIVES SYDNEY, Jan. 2. Knives were used in a fierce brawl at Balmain, and four men were injured, one so seriously that his dying dispositions were taken. He is Edward Charles Coyle, aged 48, coppersmith, Birchgrovc, who was stabbed in the back. He also sull’cred several broken ribs and a fractured arm. Three men were arrested, and charged with having indicted grievous bodily harm. The brawl started between six or seven native merchant seamen and white men over women. It began outside the Forth and Clyde Hotel. Soon about 20 men were involved, and fists and boots were used freely. (Hundreds watched the light and saw knives drawn by some of the combatants.

Police were quickly on the scene and stopped the brawl.
