GERMANS DUG IN

CHANCES OF PUSH MINISTER’S - WARNING

AMERICAN TANK LOSSES (11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 4. The Secretary for War, Mr. H. L. Stimson, stated that despite the early success of the United States’ counteroffensive, the Germans still have enough power to start a new offensive, though probably not comparable with the Ardennes assault. “Having made his gamble, the enemy is not yet pulling out,” he added. “He is not willing to retire from his temporary advantage. He has dug in at certain points of the perimeter and has maintained enough troops in the centre to make another push possible.” Mr. Stimson also declared that, despite the speed of the German break-through, the United States losses in tanks were only 6 per cent heavier than the normal monthly attrition rate. A total of 22,340 German prisoners had been captured between December 16 and the end of December. No accurate account of the United States’ losses in casualties had yet been received.
