GAINS BY ALLIES
TIP OF SALIENT NAZIS LOSE GROUND WEST OF ROCHEFORT (11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 4. The British United Press correspondent at Supreme Allied Headquarters reports that Allied gains south of Rochefort have wiped out all German penetrations west of a line running south through Rochefort. The Germans are at no point nearer than 15 miles to the Meuse River. A communique from Supreme Allied Headquarters says: “Active patrolling by Allied and enemy forces continues in Holland. In the Ardennes salient, we counter-attacked yesterday morning in the Grandmenil area. Good progress is being made against stiff opposition. Gains were made southward of Rochefort, on high ground about one mile south of Vesqueville, which is two miles southeast of St. Hubert, and in fighting in a wooded area east of Bonnerue. We are meeting stubborn opposition on the high ground one and a half miles south-west of Tillet.
“In the Bastogne bulge Senonchamps was taken. We are fighting in the area of Longchamps, Bourcy and Bois du Maister. Resistance has been stiff at Arloncourt and on the high ground south-west of Villers la Bonneau. Heavy enemy artillery fire was directed against Lutrebois.”
