BRITISH TAKE YEU

BURMA RAILHEAD FORCES ENTER PLAINS GOOD ROAD NETWORK (10 a.m.) KANDY, Jan. 3. British 14th Army troops have entered Yen, 22 miles north-west of Shwebo and the terminus of the railwav to Mandalay, via Monywa on the lower Chindwin River, states a communique issued by the Allied South-east Asia Command. Other forces are consolidating their positions at Kabo, north of Yeu, where the Weir, which controls the water supply for the Shwebo plain, was captured intact. The occupation of Yeu brings the 14th Army forces within 70 air miles or Mandalay, says the Australian Associated Press correspondent. The 14th Army is now fighting in the plains of central Burma where there is a network of comparatively good roads which will allow easier movement and possibly the employment of tanks. They are the first troops to leave the jiingle behind.
