WAR-TIME MARRIAGE

The United States authorities have asked that Australian clergy of all denominations should refrain from marrying American servicemen to Australian girls without first consulting the American headquarters. This request has been matte to ensure that there is no misrepresentation of their conjugal state by either of the parties. Recently an American serviceman married a Sydney girl under a false name, and then deserted her. A legal authority said it was difficult to avoid such tragedies in wartime, 'when girls were dazzled by the glamour of members of the oversea forces who were free spenders and lavish in their attentions. There had been a considerable recent agitation for changes in the divorce laws of tlie Australian States to simplify the procedure by which Australian girls deserted by their Allied soldierhusbands can obtain their freedom.
