STATEMENT WANTED

GOVERNMENT’S PLANS STATE ENTERPRISES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 7. Stating, that uncertainty about the extent of the Government’s policy of nationalisation was having a retarding effect on rehabilitation so far as industry was concerned, the Hon. V. A. Ward, Wellington, when sneaking to the Rehabilitation Amendment Bill in the Legislative Council yesterday, said that if there was to be nationalisation of industry, a clear and definite statement should be made. The Leader of the Council, the Hon. A. McLagan, in reply, said that no one could say what any Government proposed to do in that respect. Governments were creatures of circumstances. just as individuals were. He did not know what the Government would do and he did not think the Government knew. Personally, he thought the Government would lie well advised to consider seriously giving effect to the recommendations of the Royal Commission which had recommended the of mines, because to get the best out of the mines they should be worked as one unit. New Zealand had a mixture of private and public enterprise, and it was inevitable that public enterprise would continue to expand. Private enterprise was all right in certain conditions, but at other times, particularly in a depression. its shortcomings were encountered. Unless they were to go back to unregulated private enterprise they would have to look forward to an extension of State enterprise. |
