CHANGES ADOPTED PRESIDENT’S SELECTION SEVERAL RESIGNATIONS WASHINGTON. Dec. 4 President Roosevelt has nominated Mr. Joseph Grew, formerly U.S. Ambassador to Tokio, as Under-Secretary of State, in succession to Mr. Edward Stettinus. Mr. Roosevelt has accepted with regret tlie resignations of Assistant Secretaries Alolf Berle, Breckinridge Long, and Howland Shaw, and has appointed as their successors Messrs. William L. Clayton, Archibum MacLeish and Nelson Rockefeller. President Roosevelt's statement sain that Mr. Berle remains head of the American delegation at the civii aviation conference at Chicago, tlie proceedings of which he has concludes with skill and ability. “Mr. Dean Achcson continues as Assistant Secretary and will have general responsibility for all matters concerning the State Department’s relations with Congress, and will assume impor.tam duties with regard to inlemationa conferences,” the statement continues. “Mr. Clayton will have charge ol foreign economic affairs. He will report, at Mr. Edward Stettinius’s request, directly to me on matters pertaining to civil aviation after completion of the Chicago conference Mr Rockefeller will have charge of relations with the South American Republics. Mr. MacLeish will have charge of public and cultural relations.” Mr. Roosevelt said there will be other appointments, strengthening the State Department, in the near future
