Playing at bowls on the' -Wairoa green for the W. Smith trophies over the weekend 32 players took part and in a close finish the skips* section was won by T. H. Forster and the leads by A. G. Allen. Among those reported as having been killed in action is Private John (lan) Watson, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Watson, Wairoa. Private Watson, who was born in Scotland, came to New Zealand with his parents when an infant and was only a little over 22 years of age when his death took place in Italy. Association, having received his education at Scots College, Wellington, where he earned a name for himself on the field of sport, being captain of the senior Kugby fifteen.

It was reported at the annual meeting of the Wairoa Patriotic Committee that the quota for the past year was £5444, and the collections totalled £GO63 7s 3d, plus an allocation from Hawke’s Bay of £33 14s 2d, which tcave an overall surplus of £653 Is sd. In addition, £204 11s Id was collected and allocated to the Allied nations' appeal.
