MATAWAI NEWS

A movement is on . foot at Matawai to interest the local Maoris in building a marae. For this purpose a Maori council has been formed and several meetings have been held, with visiting delegates from all over the North Island in attendance. A discussion on Maori welfare was held and remits sent to the Maori Conference in Wellington. Sister Pritchard, district nurse, was converer of these meetings, which have roused the 'ocal Maori people to a sense of their responsibilities. The dance for the patriotic funds hold on Friday night was not so well attended as usual, probably because parents and young people are waiting for the school ball.
