CHRONIC ALCOHOLISM
GRAVE PROBLEM IN U.S. HEALTH TRAINING NEEDED (9 a.m.) DETROIT, July IG_ Dr. Thomas Meyers, secretary of the American College of NeuroPsychiatrists, told the college that chronic alcoholism is one of the major causes of- absenteeism from war plants and is second only to syphilis as America’s greatest health problem. Me estimated that there are more than 1,000,000 chronic alcoholics in the United States and that the total is increasing by 60,000 yearly. Adequate clinical and hospital facilities for alcoholism arc almost completely lacking. Alcoholism is a disease and not a crime. Prevention by health education for the young was more important than a cure.
