MANGAPAPA BLAZE
WELL-KNOWN DWELLING
OUT-BUILDINGS SAVED A large unoccupied two-storeyed house on the outskirts of Mangapapa was completely destroyed by lire last night, only the outbuildings being saved by the activities of the Gisborne Fire Brigade. The house, which was well known, particularly to the older generation, was owned formerly by the late Colonel G. J. Winter. It was purchased nearly 20 years ago by Miss A. Ferguson and was rebuilt. Its most recent owner was Mr. G. K. Crawshaw, who took the place over (IVe months ago with the intention of having some alterations made, and the permit for the work had only just arrived. ' .. The fire Was noticed last night at about 7.30 o’clock and, although the house was outside the reticulated area, the fire brigade was called, but the building already had such a good hold when the brigade arrived that it was impossible to do anything but attempt to save the several outbulidings This was done by pumping from tanks on the property. The insurances were unavailable this morning. ■ .
