PLEDGES BEING MET WASHINGTON, July 7. I A special message to the people of China from President Roosevelt was broadcast to-day to Chungking. President Roosevelt referred to “the heroic defence of your soil under the leadership of the great Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek,” and sent “the heartfelt greetings of your partner?, the'people of the United States.” The message 1 added:' “It is good to know that 'the hopes and promises I expressed on former occasions are all being borne out to-day.” 'Then followed recorded excerpts of relevant speeches of the President since China and the United States “joined hands” —as President Roosevelt put it—in the war.
