NEWS OF THE DAY
Band For Coast? * A proposal that the Waiouru Staff Band’s itinerary should include the East Coast during its Gisborne visit was made at a meeting of the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council yesterday afternoon. It was decided to make inquiries into the matter, and it was suggested that if efforts in that direction should fail, a Gisborne band might be induced to tour the Coast for patriotic purposes. Change in Name Because there was a danger of the local rehabilitation fund being misunderstood for the Government’s rehabilitation fund, the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council at a meeting yesterday afternoon decided, on the motion of Mr. J. G. Appleton, to change the name of the local fund to the welfare fund and the council’s rehabilitation committee to the welfare committee. The chairman, Mr. I. J. Quigley, explained that the local fund was for an entirely different purpose from that of the Government’s scheme, and was to “tide men over” a period and also to help in later years. Mr. W. F. Metcalfe, Matakaoa, said that the money was collected for rehabilitation to help men and set them up after the war, this to be over and above the Government grants. The chairman; That is the idea of the fund.
