BASKETBALL SEASON
EARLY NEXT MONTH TEAMS FROM THE FORCES FLOODLIGHT PRACTICES An early start for the coming season lias been arranged by the Poverty Bay Basketball Association, and grading matches will he played on May 1, the competitions to commence the following. Saturday. This was agreed to by the executive fallowing the annual meeting held on Wednesday night, Mrs. (i. H. Scouts being in tin* chair. Pleasure was expressed at the possibility of having teams representative of the W.A.A.F. and the W.A.A.C. Prior to opening the meeting, Mrs. Scents extended a hearty welcome to Miss Iris .Somervell, who had returned from service in the Middle East and who previously was a very interested and active member of the association. A presentation of (lowers was made to Miss Somervell. Mrs. Scents commented on the very creditable balance sheet and congratulated the executive on the healthy balance in ha ml. Congratulations were also extended to the winners of the Saturday competitions and comment made on the high standard of play in all grades. During the election of officers all past, officers were returned with the exception of the past president, Mrs. T. J. Corkery, who retired from office. This vacancy was filled hy Miss M. Kingston, who was heartily welcomed into the association by Mrs. Sceats. Mrs. Corkery, the retiring president, was elected a life member of the association. Mrs. j Sceats mentioned how interested Mrs. Corkery had been in basketball, first as a player, then as hon. secretary, and finally as president. The honour bestowed upon Mrs. Corkery was indeed fitting. The meeting unanimously agreed, and Mrs. sceats presented a token of gratitude from the association to Mrs. Corkery Congratulations were extended to the secretary and 'assistant secretaries for their work in the past. A suh-coipmiUee was set up to fix the rules for the Henderson Memorial Shield. Pending further advice from the Poverty Bay Electric Power Board in regard to the floodlights it was decided were to be set up, it was agreed that teams may practise at night time, pvnetise hours to he sent in to the secretary, ; At an executive meeting held after the annual meeting, Mrs. H. McLeod was reelected match secretary. It was agreed that registration fees were to be paid by July 31. all names of team members 1 to be in the bauds of the secretary by May 8. Suggestions for ap asspeiatipu concert, tournament or games evening throuh the season were sought. Those present at the meeting were:—-Mrs. (] H. Sceats. chairman, Mesdames T. J. Corkery, V.
