TE KARAKA NEWS

In an interesting address given in the Parish Hall, Te. Karaka', Miss Berg, travelling secretary for the British and Foreign Bible Society, spoke on the work of the society in eastern countries, particularly in India and Chinn, stating that in India the circulation of Scriptures reached the record number of 1,338,000. There is a work of great significance going on amongst the outcasts of India, of whom there are some 00,000,000. In recent years there has been on an average 200,000 joining the Christian Church per annum. Their influence extends even beyond their own people to the caste people who are watching with amazement lives changed and transformed by Christianity. The result is that many caste people arc reading, the word of Cod for themselves to find the explanation.

The work ahead of missionary societies and the Bible Society is simply colossal. China is a country that is clamouring for Bibles. the demand far exceeding The supply. Four, million copies distributed last year by no means met the need. ,If China is to be a Christian country wo must continue to send . ever-growing supplies of Bibles and this can be done only insofar as monetary gifts are made to the Bible Society for the extension of their work. The story of Genera! and Madame Chian g KaiShek allowing the way in which their lives had been moulded and influenced by Christian teaching made interesting hearing. Miss Berg also spoke again of the work of providing Scriptures for the fighting forces. Over 2,000,000 copies are now in circulation amongst the men.
